Capital Trail extension
Expanding into Colonial Williamsburg
The Capital Trail is growing! Through a partnership between the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation (VCTF) and the Tidewater Trails Alliance (TTA), a major expansion is underway that will bring the Virginia Capital Trail into the City of Williamsburg - strengthening regional connectivity, enhancing access to safe active transportation, and laying the foundation for the future TRAIL757 network. This expansion will be led by the VCTF through dedicated staff support, community involvement, collaboration with municipal partners, and ongoing advocacy efforts.
This extension includes approximately 7.5 miles of new trail, stretching from Jamestown High School to South England Street in Colonial Williamsburg. The project will be branded as an official extension of the Virginia Capital Trail, with an estimated cost of $25–$33 million.
A Transformational Moment for Trails in Virginia
“We’re incredibly excited to be working with our partners to extend the Capital Trail into the heart of Williamsburg. This extension will strengthen connections within the community, expand the multi-use trail network in Hampton Roads, and help further connect Virginia’s growing statewide trail system - an important recreational and economic asset for the Commonwealth - while continuing to provide the high-quality trail experience people have come to expect.”
- Will Gillette, Director of Trail Development, Virginia Capital Trail Foundation
This project marks a bold step forward in creating a unified trail experience that will benefit local residents, support economic vitality, and encourage healthy lifestyles across the region.
